The PCMCIA SmartMedia adapters I've tested:

ActionTec adapter

ActionTec

  • Doesnt support 64Mb or higher capacity cards. I swapped it for MA-2E
Olympus MA2-E adapter

Olympus

  • Supports 64Mb. The documentation says "at least 64M", so probably does 128M as well - didnt test it.
  • Runs ONLY under Plug-and-Play OS like Win98. Requires sort of driver for removable media. This driver doesnt allow to modify master boot record on the card, unless you reboot your PC with card inserted into the slot
  • Didnt test it with Win2K - probably, will work.
  • Doesnt work under Win NT (Toshiba Tecra 8100).
  • Doesnt work under DOS.
  • Didnt try it with Linux. Have seen some info about ATA cards, but this probably not the case, as some card initialization code required. I'll appreciate if you send me any info about chipset used/ programming etc - I didnt find anything usedul on the net by now.
  • I've tried this one with passive adapter PCMCIA (ATA card, 44 pin)--> IDE 40 pin. Doesnt work - some initialization required (no smoke appear either, so lucky me ;-) ).
